Day 2,997 —John Adams would be shocked we aren’t celebrating on the 2nd— with a PICTURE of STORM CLOUDS #769

I’ve always thought it to be a little funny that this well-known fact that our founders signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th to be false to be such a good metaphor, to so much we assume we know about American history. Here is something that should not be complex but was because of the people involved, and then now instead of remembering the truth, most people just know a version of the truth, but don’t realize that the basis of what they believe is objectively wrong.

I remember talking to a history teacher about this, and he had never read about the signing before, and had always thought it was signed on the 4th. It just amazes me how much of the fact checkable stuff turns out to be lies and exaggerations. In this case, there is no conspiracy or someone suppressing this information; however, it is another case of a lie being easier to explain than the truth.
