Day 4,080—Hottest Day of the Year—
The plan was to take the kids to the library for the “bubble bus” event that was happening at 10 a.m. I left a little miffed that I wouldn’t be able to run as much as I wanted to, but I figured I could still possibly do more later. Also because the library was on my way home, I could meet my family there—that did not happen. After 6 miles, I stopped at a gas station and drank 64 ounces of blue Powerade, but I was still thirsty. I was surprised by how many people were outside in the heat, but there were old runners, young walkers, people without shirts, and people riding their bikes, which made my time on Grant’s trail nerve-racking because, on top of being hot, I had bike riders zooming past me without even a customary “on your left,” but it was Saturday, so there were bike riders with all different levels of experience out. On a weekday morning, you only get the more hardcore people, who usually are much more polite.
I realized I was going to barely make it home by 10 a.m. and walked up a hill. I hadn’t taken any pictures yet, so I found some blooming flowers on a tree within a mile of my house. I had been thinking about doing the Dark 2 Dawn tonight, but I was over considering it at this point. It is one of the few local races near my house over the summer, so I have done it for the past few years, but with the 100-mile race only a few weeks ago, I figured I could wait until July to do another race. I am still thinking about doing another 100-mile race at the start of August, but I haven’t signed up yet. I bought a map of the US as a cork board, so I could start visually keeping track of the place I have run, and I have been looking at it all the time. It seems like it should be easy to do some in places like Iowa and Kansas, which visually seem really close to my home. It would be nice to do three more 100-mile races this year. I have one I signed up for already, but I would like to add one in August and next either November or December.
My plan is to go run 10 more tonight! I don’t know if it is really the hottest day of the year, but it certainly feels like it is. I broke a sweat just standing outside for 10 minutes while my kids were playing in the bubbles at the library.
