Day 2,551 —the Meaning of Names— (with a picture of a Paved Path)
Wednesday translated means, “woden’s day,” which translates to “Odin’s day.” Before it was called Odin’s day, it was named for Mercury (Roman) and Hermes (Greek). I never knew that all the days of the week had pretty literal translations, but it is something that has always fascinated me. The names of the months too.
I am feeling pretty back to normal today. The weather a little windy but nice. I saw a bike rider turn around in the middle of the straight. I wonder if they were doing laps back and forth on Edgar. I wonder if I can find out where all the street names come from too. We have a lot of similar names that come back a lot in St. Louis, and I know about some of them, but Edgar for example, I don’t know who that is, but I like that names have meanings.
Each culture likes to claim the names as their own inventions, but when you talk to people, I find most people don’t even think about where names come from, but don’t the names say something about the culture?
