Day 3,713—Night Run III: Juneteenth 2024—

It was warm, and the cars were out. There must be a lot of parties going on tonight. I saw a group of people in Blackburn Park sitting around the baseball diamond. I am unsure what they were doing, but I didn’t think anyone was supposed to be in the park after dark. It does look like almost a full moon, so maybe people are just going for it.

It is crazy how divisive Juneteenth was when it was signed into law three years ago. I remember some stockbrokers writing some sarcastic things on their closed signs, and in general I heard a lot of things from my parents group that it was a big deal over nothing. They said things like the reason that it took so long for everyone to be notified was due to the failure of mail at the time. It is not that these views are just woefully ignorant and have no bearing on reality, but the confidence of the people who said things like this was astounding.

There is a real need for us to teach history surrounding the end of the Civil War. There is an animated movie called America: The Motion Picture that is a parody of a historical film and goes to the extreme point of making sure that nothing is historically accurate, but at the same time, it is not that different from what a lot of people believe about history and politics. I think I get so upset about it because I grew up in a family that embraced myths surrounding historic events.
