Day 3,950 —No more Snow!—

I love the way it looks and the silence it facilitates, and I love how it keeps people at home and makes me feel like I know what it might be like for people traveling through the snow a couple of hundred years ago. A lot has changed since then, but whenever I travel great distances on foot, I feel connected to everyone else who has done the same for hundreds of years.

It is so different from being in a plane or a car, where you don’t feel the miles; you don’t notice the changes. Most of the time, I take a nap and then wake up, and I am there. Not so much when you’re on foot, which makes me think I want to travel all over the country by foot. I don’t know how far or what route I will take, but the idea sounds exciting: just heading out my door and seeing how far I could go and come back, maybe for weeks or months.

I like the idea of following some major rivers. I wonder if anyone has ever made a loop through the United States, hitting at least every connected state once, but returning to start completely on foot--no cars, no boats, no bikes, or planes.
