Day 4,323—Still Running Late and the First Half of Bugonia—

It wasn’t easy to get up this morning or go on this run. I had to convince myself that I would only run a few miles this morning to get started, but I spent a lot of time getting dressed and standing around, putting off the inevitable of going outside, and then, when I was outside, it took a long time to decide on a route I thought would be interesting. I went by that big gym called the Edge, which always has bright lights blaring whenever I pass it. I shouldn’t dislike it so much, but I just don’t like how people will go to the gym instead of going outside. I miss the sauna, which makes me want to get a gym membership or put a sauna in my backyard.

It was after 9:30 when I could start Bugonia last night. It isn’t the most popular Oscar movie, but it was the one I wanted to watch next. I was tempted not to start it at all, but I wanted to watch something at the end of the day, and nothing else sounded good but starting it that late would mean I would be getting fewer than 5 hours of sleep.

So far, there is both something deeply disturbing about the film and, at the same time, something human. It has been marketed as a dark comedy, but I am not sure what is funny about the subject. It seems to primarily be exploring the impact of trauma on young children, which isn’t a subject I think is funny. It did make me look up the title because I figured “Bugonia” had to be a word, and it was. It means “oxen-born,” which refers to a belief that bees could generate from the carcass of a bull or oxen if the animal was sacrificed. That information alone I find fascinating. I am tempted to read more about the belief system, but I think I should finish the movie first. I will write a full review when I finish the movie. The most positive thing I can think about is that tomorrow is Friday.
