Day 3,753 —Thoughts on Tragedy—

My cats got me up and I made coffee. I sat stretching, drinking coffee for a moment. I ran with my weighted vest and thought about tragedy.

I was thinking how odd it is that in some ways society is less reflective compared to past cultures. When I think about a tragic character, I think about someone who in the simplest terms is killed by society. A tragic character cannot be true to themselves and continue to exist.

One of the points of tragedy was to make everyone reflect about the society we all live in and how it/we contribute to needless deaths, like the character(s) portrayed in the story.

I was thinking about this partly because I decided not to listen to anything this morning as I was running, and partly because it made me think about how we handle needless death. Instead of taking tragedy as an indication, that there is a problem, now a lot of people focus on deciding on who is most at fault for the tragic event. In the end, some people blame one group, and that group typically blames the other group. Still, another group of people will blame the victim(s). No, one wants to say that we’re all responsible. Because if I were to admit that I am responsible as well, that would mean I would have to change.
