Day 3,356 —Broken Shoes and Broken Promises—
My sandal broke during mile five. I tried to put the strap back but it snapped, so I ended up putting my sandals in my vest and running only in my socks. I was running in my vest again. This time with mostly full water bottles. I had them both on the front of my vest, which I don’t think I really liked.
I might try the bladder approach again because it is easier to have the majority of the water weight on my back. The problem with water bladders is how long they take to fill back up during races, so I am going to have to practice. I like the idea of trying to have both available at various times of the race. Possibly I'll keep my vest light until later in the race, or I'll only start using it as a backup for every other aid station, so it doesn’t take as much time to fill up. I like the idea of filling it up with ice at each stop so that I would have to wait to drink the water anyway. I didn’t drink any of the water with me but I felt like I needed it. I am still not sure what the best approach is to increase my capacity for hydration; probably eating less salt would make sense but I don’t know what else I should be doing.
