Day 2,637 —Cheerios are Not Vegan— with a PICTURE of TREES and the SUN

I am not a big cereal guy, but my wife and daughter like cereal, and I was thinking of trying to find a healthier vegan cereal for them, and I discovered what they have been eating, Cheerios, is not vegan. Pretty disappointed that apparently all cereals made by General Mills and Post contain vitamin D3, which derives from sheep wool.

Some vegans still consider this okay if not ideal while some consider it not vegan.

I also did not know that some vegans consider sugar to be not vegan because it is processed with bone char. I did not know this.

I try to eat as little sugar as possible, but I didn’t think of sugar as an animal product, but it makes sense. It seems like a lot of these processes can be changed. Vitamin D2 is derived from plants, so why not just use that? Aren’t their other ways to process sugar that does not use bone char?

A lot to think about this morning. When I started doing this, it seemed easy to know the main differences, but now it seems more complicated. The safe bet is just to always eat as many whole foods as possible. At least I know my apples and bananas are vegan and the peanut butter I make myself (a lot of peanut butter you buy is not vegan).

Favorite vegan and plant based cereals anyone? I hate having to make a special trip to Whole Foods to buy things, but maybe I will have to for cereal. There just doesn’t seem to be a lot of healthy options at the grocery store.
