Day 3,477—Didn’t Survive the Night but had Fun—

I am glad I was able to “show up,” as Joel and I talked about during the run. When I got there, Eric immediately joked with me about my plan to run 100 miles on Friday but do this event. My plan at the time was to make it to 6 a.m., so I figured that was still doable, but I was already having second thoughts and wasn’t feeling great. It was a little cold when we started, but there was no rain.

The course was fun, with an abandoned town, a field of tires, and other interesting objects to look at. The website described the race as a 2-mile loop, but the first lap took me to 2.3 or 2.4, and I might have gone over one part twice. I was at 4.5 after one “4” mile loop, but everyone’s watches were pretty spread out from a tenth of a mile to a half.

The guy running the race, in a super-baller move, removed a tenth of a mile from the race. I had a good time talking to Joel and Eric. We were all just taking our time. We did the first 3 laps without much going on, but on the 4th lap we split up. I was running ahead to pace myself, but then I took a wrong turn because I finished earlier than I thought I would.

I sat and waited for the lap to be complete, thinking about what to do. I almost asked them to see if they wanted me to drop some or try to add some but I wasn’t sure. When Joel got back, he said he had an injury acting up. I now had another good reason to stop, so we did one last lap together and called it quits after that.

This is now the second time I have stopped my plan for a race this year, but I am confident it was the right call for both. I would have loved to run more but I am not feeling amazing, and I have 100 miles to think about on Friday.
