Day 4,497—I want those “Dead Presidents”—

Start time: 5:20 a.m.

Weather: High 70s wind 6.5  mi/h, Humidity 83%

I had a much better day yesterday at work. Someone even came to fix my office! I still don’t have any ceiling boards, but besides that it is looking a lot better, and they fixed the leak! There are so many moving parts, and I am staying positive about it. One of the other things the district is doing this year is giving all the teachers MacBooks but not the counselors, the social workers, or the AICs. It is ridiculous from my perspective because, in a way, I have been punished for getting another master's degree. I make slightly less money, and now I don’t get a MacBook? It is not the end-all, be-all or anything, but just how much the district disrespects school counselors and social workers is ridiculous. We all have to go to school longer, and our jobs are more competitive, so they pay us less and don’t give us MacBooks?! I hope I get a key to my office this year. But regardless of this, I felt like a lot of things went better yesterday, and in general I was in a good mood. I even started to get excited about planning classroom lessons and small groups! I don’t know how many or what time I will be able to commit to it, but I need to be intentional from the start of the year. I might go for three small groups, one each grade level, and plan a standing classroom lesson every week, alternating grade levels. I think it is just important that I start with what I want to do and do my small groups and classroom lessons at the same time every week.

I had a great run today! I started it listening to “I Don’t Get Tired,” which I said would be my walk-out song when we did introductions yesterday. A walk-out song is hard to pick, but that song does get me going. I might not be running after those “dead presidents,” but I am running after something.
